World's tallest mohawk stands 3 ft 8.6 inches :

A Japanese designer has been crowned by the Guinness Book of World Records for having the tallest mohawk haircut in the world. The tip of Kazuhiro Watanabe's spiked mohawk stands 3 ft 8.6 inches proud of his skull and earned him a place in the 2013 edition of the book, which is released on Thursday.
Watanabe unveiled his hair-do at a press event in New York on Wednesday to mark the launch of the new book. "It was a lot of work ... but I am happy to have achieved the world's No 1," 40-year-old Watanabe told reporters, adding that it had taken him 15 years to grow the mohawk to its present size.
To get it into shape takes three stylists, three cannisters of hair spray and a bottle of hair gel, Watanabe said.
Without gel and hairspray, the hair reaches his knees.

Lizard that ain't a Chameleon - The Carolina Anole :

The Carolina Anole or Green Anole is a very interesting type of Lizard. Another name that you may hear it called by is the American Chameleon because it can change colors. That does make things a bit confusing though because scientifically this Lizard doesn’t fall into the category of Chameleon at all.
Being able to change their color based on mood or habitat is a great feature for the Carolina Anole or Green Anole. This can help them to remain well protected from various predators in their natural environment. Most of the time they are lime green with a cream or white belly. They have a very long tail that gets thinner the further away from the body.

The largest number of children ever born to one woman was 69 :

The greatest officially recorded number of children born to one mother is 69, to the wife of Feodor Vassilyev (b. 1707–c.1782), a peasant from Shuya, Russia. In 27 confinements she gave birth to 16 pairs of twins, seven sets of triplets and four sets of quadruplets.
Numerous contemporaneous sources exist, which suggest that this seemingly improbably and statistically unlikely story is true. The case was reported to Moscow by the Monastery of Nikolsk on 27 Feb 1782, which had recorded every birth. It is noted that, by this time, only two of the children who were born in the period c. 1725–65 failed to survive their infancy.

Shining Halo cloud mystery :

Above is a still from video taken last October and uploaded onto YouTube of a giant halo in an overcast sky over Moscow. The unusual sight ignited UFO rumors, but was easily explained by meteorologists. The "clouds" was just an optical illusion caused by sunlight hitting a cloud at just the right angle. The cloud's round shape is likely what is known as a hole-punch cloud. These clouds occur within cirrostratus clouds, which are often composed of ice crystals and drops of water that are below freezing temperature but still in liquid form. When cirrostratus clouds are disturbed by planes or strong winds, the droplets can freeze instantly or evaporate, the latter of which will form the hole.

World’s Leggiest Animal Has 750 Legs :

First seen by government scientists in 1928, Illacme plenipes—”the acme of plentiful legs” has more legs than any other animal! It's a millipede, of course. What else could it possibly be?
The strange thing is how tiny it is. We're talking scarcely more than 3 cm (1.2 in) long and about half a millimetre (0.2 in) wide. In this diminutive frame they pack some 750 legs!
Isn't that amazing? You'd think they'd have legs on their back, legs on their sides and legs on their legs... just pure legs everywhere! Instead it's a skinny but otherwise perfectly normal millipede. They just happen to be unbelievably leggy.

Rare Blue Lobster Found Near Ocean City :

A blue lobster caught in waters off the coast, is said to be a 1-in-2-million exception to the rust-colored norm.He has been staying in his own container in Martin's Fish Co.'s lobster tank since the crew of the Pot Luck fishing boat brought him in with the Thursday catch.
"We like to name all our lobsters," assistant manager Ginger Nappi said Friday while people gathered around the tank, checking out Toby.
Toby is blue because of a genetic variation that shows up in about one of every 2 million born that causes the lobster to produce an excessive amount of a particular protein that gives it that pigmentation, according to the University of Maine Lobster Institute.Even more rare: A yellow lobster, estimated to be a 1-in-30-million anomoly, and the 1-in-100-million albino lobster, the Lobster Institute said.

Alien Skulls Found At Sonora, Mexico, Ancient Burial Site :

An ancient burial site in Mexico, discovered in 1999 but only recently investigated, has revealed skeletal remains with odd, "alien-shaped" skulls. They were unearthed in the northwestern Mexican state of Sonora at a site known as "El Cementerio" when workers stumbled upon the remains accidentally while digging to install an irrigation system. According to Time, the bones date to between A.D. 940 and 1308, making them around 1,000 years old.
The skulls appear to have been intentionally deformed until they resembled something akin to the "Coneheads," the fictional alien family made famous on "Saturday Night Live" in the late 1970s. Ryan Matthew, a host on the Science Channel, explained that the process of cranial deformation usually began in childhood.
"When you were a newborn baby, you would be cradle-boarded," Matthew said. "They would put two boards around the head and wrap it very securely. Because the head of a child is very soft, it can be manipulated forward, but the process would take several months."

Gold Rush - Amateur Gold Digger Strikes 12-Pound Jackpot :

Using a handheld metal detector, he found the nugget on Wednesday, 60cm underground near the town of Ballarat. Its value is estimated at more than $A300,000. The BBC reports gold currently trades in Australia at about $A1600 per ounce, but the weight of the nugget could add a premium.
"We are 162 years into a gold rush and Ballarat is still producing nuggets - it's unheard of," said Ballarat Mining Exchange Gold Shop owner Cordell Kent. He said the prospector had been using a state-of-the-art metal detector, which meant he was able to find the gold relatively deep underground in an area which has been searched many times in the past.

Slauerhoffbrug - The Bridge That Looks Like It's Flipping Pancakes :

The Slauerhoffbrug is one tail bridge that stands out, even in the bridge-happy Netherlands. The bridge, located in Leeuwarden, was designed by Van Driel Mechatronica to be a fully automatic bridge with an ability to sense and adapt to its surroundings. While this technology is not for just any bridge—more traffic requires a more intelligent controller—the bridge is sensibly high-tech for its area, says Bart Ney, a Public Information Officer for the San Francisco–Oakland Bay Bridge, which is scheduled to be completed in 2013. "The Slauerhoffbrug is immediately both iconic and utilitarian and allows optimum flow of maritime and automobile traffic," he says.

The Slauerhoffbrug crosses over the Harlinger Vaart River. "A movable bridge was necessary because a new beltway crossed this canal," van Driel says. Constructed in 2000 from iron and steel, the bridge is raised and lowered 10 times a day by two hydraulic cylinders located in a single pylon next to the bridge. The lift bearing, complete with asphalt and road markings, seamlessly disappears into the road when lowered. The base model of the bridge is a limited turntable bascule bridge, in which the rising section is counterbalanced by a weight, like the Pegasusbrug near Ouistreham in France. Such bridges were built all over the world in the 18th, 19th and 20th centuries, van Driel says.

The Slauerhoffbrug is built in an L-shape, bending the bearing bars that lead to the deck, with the foundation built beside the bridge. The principal beams and cross girders are absent. This allows a low construction height that increases the lifting height. And in true Dutch fashion, this tail bridge isn't just an engineering feat, but a work of art. It is painted in yellow and blue, representative of Leewaurden's flag and seal. The asymmetrical shape can be seen for miles when the deck is completely raised and locked upright in midair.

Red-dy salted! The bizarre African lake turned blood red :

French name of lake is Lac Rose (Pink Lake), and not without reason has been attributed to this akwenowi. Waters of the lake have a pink color that is particularly clear during the dry season.
Lake lies to the east of the capital Dakar, Senegal, and the most southernmost point of Africa to the west of Cape Verde. Waters of the lake changes its color depending on the intensity of incident sunlight. It is believed that the pink color of micro-organisms are responsible, and high concentration of minerals in the surrounding soils, mainly chlorine and minerals.

Lake Retba like its counterpart in Australia, the lake is very salty Hillier and separated from the ocean only a narrow strip of dunes a few hundred meters. This is due to the fact that in ancient times the lake were small coves, which, by the applied sand was cut off from the open water area. As a result of evaporating seawater, seawater salinity growth followed, until the present level, which in the lake Retba is 38%, or about the same as the salinity of the Dead Sea.
The lake is still African mined salt, and the manner of delivery has not changed for years and is passed down from generation to generation. The whole process starts from the bottom grab the Pink Lake salty sludge. It is then transported to the shore, where salt is washed and dried in the sun. After drying, the salt forms a dense shell, which must be crushed. Finally ready to sell salt Piles left behind in small mounds.

The Dancing Plague of 1518 :

The Dancing Plague (or Dance Epidemic) of 1518 was a case of dancing mania that occurred in Strasbourg, Alsace (then part of the Holy Roman Empire) in July 1518. Numerous people took to dancing for days without rest, and, over the period of about one month, some of the people died from heart attack, stroke, or exhaustion.
The outbreak began in July 1518, when a woman, Frau Troffea, began to dance fervently in a street in Strasbourg. This lasted somewhere between four to six days. Within a week, 34 others had joined, and within a month, there were around 400 dancers. Some of these people eventually died from heart attack, stroke, or exhaustion.
Historical documents, including "physician notes, cathedral sermons, local and regional chronicles, and even notes issued by the Strasbourg city council" are clear that the victims danced. It is not known why these people danced to their deaths.

Pablo Escobar was making so much money, he spent $2,500 a month on rubber bands to bundle up his stacks of cash :

Colombian drug lord Pablo Escobar was making so much money, he spent $2,500 a month on rubber bands to bundle up his stacks of cash. Pablo was earning so much that each year he writes off 10% of the money because the rats ate it in storage or it got damaged by water or lost.
In most businesses, seeing a return on investment (ROI) of 100% would be more than enough for a company to thrive. By some estimates, notorious Colombian cocaine kingpin Pablo Escobar enjoyed an ROI of as much as 20,000%. Put another way, for every $1 he put into his business, he got about $200 in return.

Ectrodactyly - Lobster-claw syndrome :

The word ectrodactyly comes from the Greek word ektroma, which means abortion and daktylos, which means finger; so it literally means, abortion (of a) finger. It occurs in 1 out of every 90,000 live births and was first described in 1936. The physical appearance is due to, “median clefts of the hands and feet and aplasia/or hypoplasia of the phalanges, metacarpals and metatarsals.” In other words, some fingers and toes are fused or missing.
Fortunately, people with this condition can lead normal lives, despite this physical abnormality. Highly successful radio host Bree Walker was born with Ectrodactyly, and she is an advocate for people with disabilities.

Cooper's Hill Cheese-Rolling Festival :

The origins of this ‘traditional’ event are somewhat murky but it has been held for at least 200 years at Cooper’s Hill near Gloucester in the Cotswolds. Participants chase a wheel of locally made Double Gloucester Cheese down the hill and the first person over the finish line wins the cheese! This is a notoriously dangerous event with the cheese reaching up to speeds of 70mph, which is fast enough to knock over and injure spectators.

The hill itself is steep and most participants find themselves rolling down the hill rather than running, which makes the event rather entertaining for spectators. Fans of this event are true diehards though. A group of paramedics and volunteers and a couple of ambulances are stationed at the bottom of the hill ready to carry the injured away to the hospital.

Virgin Boy Eggs - Cooked In Urine :

"Tong Zi Dan" (Virgin Boy Egg) is one of the delicacy and a popular snack for the spring time in Dongyang, China that is known for their goodness for human's health such as reducing body heat, reinvigorating the body and enhance blood circulation. They boil the eggs in prepubescent boys preferably under the age of 10. Apparently you won't get stroke if you eat these 'fragrant' eggs. They sell these eggs for 1.50 yuen and it is apparently fresh and salty (well of course it is salty, duh)

They collect urine by going to primary schools toilet, leaving buckets around. Don't worry, those sick boys are not allowed to pee in the bucket. They must be sad not being able to contribute to the making of these special eggs.

It takes a day to make "Virgin boy eggs". They have to soak and boil raw eggs in a pot of urine. When the shells of the hard boiled eggs are cracked, it is continued to simmer in urine for hours. They are to keep refilling the urine into the pot and control fire in order to avoid over heated and over cooking.

Bizzare Insect - The Golden Tortoise Beetle :

This pretty little molten gold beetle has been doing the rounds of the Internet lately, because not only does it look like nothing else on Earth, but it can also completely change colours. And it’s just as pretty when it does.
This is golden tortoise beetle (Charidotella sexpunctata, previously known as Metriona bicolor), a tiny, metallic North American insect that belongs to the leaf beetle family, Chrysomelidae, which includes flea beetles, asparagus beetles and longhorn beetles. Nicknamed ‘goldenbugs’, golden tortoise beetles grow to around 5.0 to 7.0 mm in length and favour foods such as sweet potato and morning glory.

Oh and did I mention that golden tortoise beetles, as larvae, protect themselves by sticking old skin and faecal matter to their anal forks – otherwise known as faecal parasols – to form a shield? How did something with an anal fork get to be so pretty?

Female Kangaroos Have Three Vaginas :

Female Kangaroos, Koalas, Wombats and Tasmanian devils all have 3 vaginas. The diagram below explains the complicated plumbing. This set-up is shared by all marsupials – the group of mammals that raise their young in pouches. Koalas, wombats and Tasmanian devils all share the three-vagina structure. The side ones carry sperm to the two uteruses (and males marsupials often have two-pronged penises), while the middle vagina sends the joey down to the outside world. Note that the ureters, which carry urine from the kidneys to the bladder, pass through the gaps between the three tubes. In placental mammals, like us, the ureters develop in a different way, and don’t go through the reproductive system. As we develop, the precursors to the reproductive tubes eventually fuse into a single vagina. In marsupials, this can’t happen.
